Two unrelated deaths reported in Lincoln County jail

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Two inmates died at the Lincoln County Detention Center this week in unrelated ways, leading to investigations by state officials, according to the county.

The first death happened on Monday. Officers found 26-year-old Kristopher Lee Applegate having what looked like a medical emergency, jail officials said.

Jail staff tried to help him and called for emergency crews, officials added in a statement.

Applegate was taken to CaroMont Gaston hospital, where he later died.

Just one day later, another inmate died. Officers said they saw Matthew Steven Trammell, 34, showing signs of what looked like a drug overdose.

Despite immediate efforts to save him, Trammell did not survive, they said.

Following standard rules, jail officials contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The state agency will look into both deaths separately to figure out what happened.
