Tornado with 85 mph winds hit North Carolina on Sunday

FOUR OAKS, N.C. (WNCN) — A tornado briefly touched down in Johnston County early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

Based on a damage survey, NWS Raleigh determined a “strong EF0” tornado with estimated peak winds of 85 miles per hour that touched down three miles south-southwest of Four Oaks at 4:59 a.m. and was off the ground less than a minute later. At the time, a line of storms was moving through the region.

“A carport was picked up and displaced approximately 100 yards downstream,” as a result of the twister, NWS Raleigh said, “while a portion of a roof was torn off an outbuilding and displaced 100 yards to the northwest.”

Other damage on the affected property included a weakened tree that was uprooted and several others that were snapped, according to NWS Raleigh, which conducted the survey with the help of the Johnston County Emergency Management Division.

The survey information is preliminary and could change pending a final review of the weather event, NWS Raleigh said.
