This is the first time the teams have played each other since 2020.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fresh off two straight wins and a bye week, the Carolina Panthers (3-7) return to Bank of America Stadium on Sunday to host the Kansas City Chiefs (9-1).
Kansas City is coming off its first loss of the season — a 30-21 loss to Buffalo last week. The Panthers last played on Nov. 10, when they defeated the New York Giants in overtime in a game played in Munich, Germany.
This is only the eighth all-time meeting between the Panthers and Chiefs. Kansas City has won the last three times the teams have faced, most recently a 33-31 victory on Nov. 8, 2020.
Carolina rookie running back Jonathon Brooks is set to make his NFL debut for the Panthers on Sunday. He’ll back up Chuba Hubbard, who currently ranks fourth in the NFL in rushing (818).
The Panthers could also have receiver Adam Thielen back for the first time since a win over Las Vegas earlier in the season, though his status for Sunday’s game is still questionable as he works back from a hamstring injury.
Kicker Eddy Pineiro has also been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Pineiro recently became the NFL’s all-time most accurate kicker thanks to a few misses from Baltimore’s Justin Tucker last week. For his career, Pineiro has made 101-of-113 (89.4%) of his field goal attempts since joining the league in 2019.
Kansas City has been a middle-of-the-road team offensively this season, ranking 16th in the NFL in total yards per game, but the Chiefs have continuously found ways to win thanks to the leadership of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes’ stats aren’t nearly as gaudy this year (2,404 yards, 15 touchdowns, 11 interceptions) as in some of his previous seasons, but that hasn’t mattered because the wins keep piling up.
This might be the week Mahomes gets going, though, as Carolina currently has the 29th-ranked defense in the league in terms of total yards given up.
