Three-year anniversary of deadly airport attack in Afghanistan

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — It’s been three years since an attack at the Kabul Airport killed 13 United States Service Members during our country’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

One of those victims was Sergeant Nicole Gee, who was based at Camp Lejeune.

First Lieutenant Hunter Lare grew up with Gee and considered her a best friend. Gee was the reason she decided to enlist in the Marine Corps. They grew up doing typical teenage things such as running cross country, having sleepovers and graduating together. Lare said Gee was incredibly smart and hardworking.

Gee enlisted right out of high school. Her dedication is what drew Lare to enlist. Just six days before the attack, Gee posted on Instagram in Kabul saying “I love my job.” Then, she and 12 other servicemen made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lare still takes grieving day-by-day and said dates like Gee’s birthday and today are some of the hardest.
