CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the alleged crimes.
A second suspect has been arrested after a woman died in a Charlotte crash on Dec. 25, sparking a homicide investigation.
James Mason was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 7, according to court records. He is expected in court on Jan. 8, and is accused of stealing Kennedi Jones’ bookbag and iPhone. He is alleged to have threatened Jones with a gun.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the crash happened on Shamrock Drive, not far from Hickory Grove Road and North Sharon Amity Road. When officers arrived around 11:20 p.m. on Dec. 25, they found a vehicle down an embankment near the road. Officers found the driver, identified as Jones, inside the vehicle with life-threatening injuries.
She was taken to a local hospital where hospital staff confirmed she died due to her injuries.
This is the second arrest in the investigation. Dreshon Jibri Moreno, 21, had previously been charged with Jones’ murder. Moreno is also charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon; affidavits allege he stole Jones’ phone and threatened her with a gun.
During an initial court appearance on Jan. 2, Moreno was appointed a public defender and remains in jail under no bond. His next court appearance is set for Jan. 22.
