RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — On Wednesday, lawmakers returned to the state Capitol to officially begin the 2025 session.
Republicans are eyeing budget concerns and Democratic leadership has mentioned priorities of childcare funding across the state. The two do agree on at least one priority.
“I expect the House will probably pass some Helene-related bill early on in session,” House Speaker Destin Hall said on Wednesday.
Lawmakers are wasting no time figuring out the best approach to rebuilding the western side of the state.
“We don’t want to overlap with what the federal government is doing, we want to make sure we’re being efficient, so not spending things on the same things the feds are going to do,” Representative Hall said.
They’re even floating ideas of potentially changing up recovery efforts all across the entire state.
“I don’t think this body is going to support continuing to fund what’s just been an absolute disaster with NCORR over the last 8 years,” Representative Hall said.
There’s a committee meeting on Thursday to talk more about Helene funding and what resources are coming from out of the state as well.
