CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Atrium Health is putting new rules in place to protect patients during a rise in respiratory illnesses.
Starting Tuesday, children under 12 won’t be allowed to visit patients in most hospital areas. Visitors will also need to wear masks in places where patients receive care and in emergency room waiting areas.
The hospital system said it made these changes because of a steady rise in respiratory illnesses in the area. Health officials said they want to protect patients who might be more likely to get very sick.
These changes will affect all emergency rooms, regular hospital units, rehabilitation facilities, mental health units and cancer treatment areas across Atrium Health locations.
Officials haven’t said how long these restrictions will last.
Dr. Katie Passaretti, who oversees infection prevention at Atrium Health’s parent organization, said everyone can help stop illnesses from spreading.
Passaretti recommends three main ways to stay well and prevent the spread of illnesses:
- Getting all recommended vaccines
- Washing hands regularly
- Staying home when feeling sick
“By taking these steps, everyone in the community can contribute to slowing the spread of respiratory illnesses this season,” said Passaretti. “These preventive measures are simple but powerful in helping us protect ourselves and those most vulnerable.”
