CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Water announced Thursday an untreated wastewater overflow happened in a west Charlotte creek.
The 1,070-gallon overflow took place near 1112 Browns Ave. which is north of where Freedom Drive intersects with Interstate 85. Charlotte Water officials told WNCC Charlotte the untreated wastewater reached Paw Creek in the Catawba River Watershed.
Reportedly, the overflow was caused by a blockage of debris, including rags and wipes.
Charlotte Water Spokesperson Cam Coley emphasized the importance of community involvement in preventing such incidents.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Coley said. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek, or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not break down in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
Residents can help prevent future overflows by following simple guidelines: toss paper towels, wipes, hair, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss, coffee grounds, and excess food in the trash; only toilet paper should be flushed; soap suds, small amounts of food, and liquids (excluding fats, oils, or grease) can go down the kitchen sink; and used and expired oils and grease should be taken to a full-service recycling center.
Charlotte Water crews maintain over 4,562 miles of wastewater pipes, working to ensure the safe daily delivery of more than 91 million gallons of wastewater to treatment plants. These efforts are funded by charges from monthly water bills of Charlotte citizens, which support preventative maintenance and emergency response.
