Mountain snow postpones high school playoff games

A winter storm brought several inches of snow to the North Carolina mountains, creating dangerous road conditions across the region.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Winter weather in the North Carolina mountains postponed at least two high school football playoff games that were scheduled for Friday.

Watauga High School was scheduled to host Mallard Creek in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. The game will now be played at 6 p.m. Saturday, the school announced. Meanwhile, the Hayesville at Mountain Heritage game will also be played at 6 p.m., according to WRAL

The Pioneers enter the playoffs with an undefeated record. Mallard Creek is the No. 13 seed in 4A with a 9-2 record. Watauga defeated Ragsdale in the first round of the playoffs. Mallard Creek advanced by beating Lake Norman. The winner of Saturday’s game will face the winner of Hough and Independence.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for some mountain counties as the storm brought several inches of snow to the High Country. Weather Impact meteorologist Chris Mulcahy says up to 7 inches of accumulation is possible in the higher elevations with anywhere from 2-4 inches likely for areas like Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk.

The winter weather advisory ends at 6 a.m. Saturday. Mulcahy expects the snow to end sooner than that, but an overnight freeze will lead to dangerous travel conditions in the region. Several districts were on remote learning Friday due to the wintry weather.
