Meet the Winston-Salem doctor who has been practicing medicine for nearly 50 years

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Dr. Peter Robie always wanted to be a doctor.

“The doctors that took care of me when I was a kid were just wonderful,” said Robie. “I wanted to be like them.”

Those seeds, planted in his childhood, led Robie to a career that has spanned nearly 50 years.

“Our job is more than a profession,” he said. “It’s a calling.”

He’s retired twice. But when your heart is in serving, you keep going.

“If you love what you’re doing, you’re not really working. You’re doing your passion,” he said.

Checking hearts is what Robie has done best, like with villagers in the Dominican Republic who incorrectly thought children with disabilities were contagious. He educated the adults to help bring children, who had been locked away in darkness, out among family and friends. His efforts saved many.

“That’s why we do what we do,” said Robie. “Bring people into the light.”

Today he’s still practicing medicine at the Community Care Center on New Walkertown Road. The center is a nonprofit free clinic for those without insurance.

“Taking care of the poor is the highest calling we can have,” he said. “It’s a calling, and it’s hard to retire from something that you love.”

Robie is on many medical boards and has been recognized by many medical groups for his years of service to all communities.
