Man already in prison charged with murder at South Carolina birthday party

Marshawn Devon Geiger, already serving time, was charged with murder and attempted murder in a 2023 Fairfield County shooting.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A man already in prison for another crime in South Carolina has been charged with a murder that happened at a birthday party in Fairfield County in 2023.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday that Marshawn Devon Geiger has been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in a shooting in the Greenbrier area on July 1, 2023. 

The sheriff’s department said that Geiger opened fire into a crowd attending a birthday party on Peach Road and killed Tyon D. Byrd. Two other people were also hit by gunfire. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Sheriff Will Montgomery described Byrd’s death and the wounds to the other two victims as senseless.

Authorities identified Geiger as a suspect following a continued investigation. However, he was already in a South Carolina Department of Corrections facility due to an unrelated conviction by the Fairfield County leveled its charges against him.

Court records show Geiger is serving a seven-year sentence related to aggravated breach of peace.

“We are glad to have been able to make an arrest in this investigation,” he said, acknowledging the work of those who helped bring the new charges against Geiger.

He also thanked those who came forward and spoke to investigators.

“Without the community partnerships that we have, and are so proud of, making headway in investigations such as this would be much more difficult.”
