Harris and Trump spar over debate

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Former president Donald Trump appears to be walking back his commitment to a 2nd presidential debate.

His campaign says they are waiting until Vice President Kamala Harris is formally nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate.

A spokesperson with the Trump campaign argued because of recent political chaos within the Democratic party it would be inappropriate to schedule a debate because Democrats could change their candidate.

On the heels of a multi-state campaign run Harris told reporters she and Trump each agreed to debate in September.

“I think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage and so, I am ready. Let’s go,” Harris said.

Back in May President Joe Biden and Trump agreed to two debates one in June on CNN, the other in September on ABC.

In a tweet Harris asked what happened to anywhere any time.  Trump insists he wants to debate Harris and is not shying away from criticizing the VP.

“Kamala Harris is the most liberal elected politician in American history,” said Trump.

Earlier this week Trump’s running mate Senator J.D. Vance suggested he wanted in on the action.

“I was told I was going to get to debate Kamala Harris, and now President Trump is going to get to debate her? I’m kind of pissed off about that, if I’m being honest with you,” said Vance.

Since President Biden dropped out of the race Trump says he would prefer if FOX News hosted the next debate.

FOX News has now requested to host a debate a week after the ABC debate.  The Harris campaign has not responded.
