DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A busy Durham interstate has reopened after being partially closed following a pair of massive crashes early Tuesday morning.
One crash occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 near E. Club Boulevard in Durham.
In a statement, Durham police said the northbound and southbound lanes were experiencing “heavy standing water” from the recent storm. As a result, this caused several vehicle collisions.
NCDOT cameras showed multiple emergency vehicles responding to the crash site, blocking significant portions of the interstate.
Another wreck happened near I-885 close to mile marker 178, resulting in two left southbound lanes being shut down.
Police said the second crash involved two vehicles, with a person inside one of the cars being trapped. EMS crews responded to the scene and transported one man to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The interstate experienced significant delays for a few hours, but it fully reopened by 7:45 a.m.
