3 tornadoes hit North Carolina county in 12 hours

TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Weather Service on Tuesday evening confirmed the first of what turned out to be three tornadoes in Edgecombe County during a 12-hour period starting Monday afternoon.

Officials have already confirmed a tornado near Pinetops that hit early Tuesday morning, causing damage. They also confirmed an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 to 110 miles per hour touched down in the area of southern Macclesfield at 3:27 a.m., staying on the ground for two minutes. According to NWS Raleigh, that tornado moved north across Route 258 and damaged a mobile home along with snapping several trees

The National Weather Service now confirms that damage just after 5 p.m. Monday in Princeville, Tarboro, and Edgecombe County was from a tornado. The tornado was 100 yards wide and was on the ground for 2.1 miles.

The tornado, with winds up to 110 mph, started at 5:06 p.m. with a touchdown in the Southern Terrace area of Princeville, the weather service said.

Damage was apparent in parts of Tarboro, with CBS 17 crews spotting several tree limbs down and trees on homes and cars.

In northeast Tarboro, a tree was down on cars parked at a home. Also, a large tree was knocked over and part of it fell onto a home near Wooten Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
