14-year-old dead after an incident in Mount Airy, deputies say

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the teens death.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — The Surry County Sheriff’s Office is collaborating with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of a 14-year-old.

Deputies said the death occurred Thursday on Southridge Place in Mount Airy.

“This is a tragic incident. My staff and I extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to family members and the school community during this challenging time,” Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt said.

Detectives from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and Supervisors with the School Resource Officers division have been working with Surry County Schools.

Deputies said the incident remains an open investigation.

Statement from Surry County Schools: 

We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and Pilot Mountain Middle School community.

To support students and staff, a district crisis intervention team will be on-site at Pilot Mountain Middle School tomorrow. This team will provide counseling and other resources to help those impacted process this tragic event. Additionally, we are sending a message to parents this evening to encourage conversations with their children before returning to school.

We appreciate your thoughts and prayers for the family, faculty, and students during this difficult time.
