PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — Temperatures fall below freezing this evening with many in the 20s by 9 p.m. Overnight, we’ll continue to see mostly clear skies with temperatures falling into the low 20s Sunday morning. While we’ll start the day with mostly sunny skies, clouds will roll in by the afternoon Sunday and temperatures will reach the low 40s.
All eyes will be on the weather from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. Data is trying to bring a burst of snow or sleet Sunday afternoon between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. However, the potential for this to happen is very low due to incredibly dry air at the surface that will still be in place on Sunday afternoon. While snow/sleet may try to fall Sunday afternoon, the layer of dry air at the surface means whatever falls will likely evaporate before reaching the ground. If the snow falls at a heavy intensity, it could bring moisture into the lower levels allowing some flakes to reach the ground.
By Sunday evening, slightly warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere will move in, which means we’re more likely to see rain or freezing rain overnight Sunday through early Monday morning. The higher potential to see freezing rain will be in the mountains and foothills. The best time to see the rain/freezing rain mix will be between midnight and 9 AM. Ice accumulation around 0.1″ to 0.25″ is possible in the mountains and foothills as well as in Stokes, Rockingham and Caswell counties. Slick spots will be likely in the mountains and foothills Monday morning and possibly in the Triad so be sure to use extra caution on the roadways.Â
From 8/9 am Monday through midday Monday, rain will take over as temperatures return above freezing across the Piedmont Triad. Rain ends around noon. Temperatures will be near but slightly above freezing Monday morning with afternoon highs in the low 40s. In the afternoon/evening Monday, a brief burst of snow from leftover moisture will be possible as temperatures begin to fall below freezing. The chance is low with a better potential mainly northeast of the Triad along the NC/VA border.
Clear skies into Tuesday morning with temperatures in the low 20s. We’ll need to watch for any leftover moisture on the roadways as anything that looks wet will likely be black ice and slippery. Sunshine dominates into the afternoon with highs in the upper 30s.
Sunshine and quiet weather remain into Wednesday and Thursday however cold air will also remain in place. We’ll start Wednesday morning in the low 20s with highs in the upper 30s. Temperatures will be even colder on Thursday with morning lows in the 10s and highs in the mid-30s.
We’ll be watching next Friday and Saturday closely as another system looks to move in for the start of the weekend. Depending on temperatures and moisture, it could be another wintry system. Temperatures look to be in the low to mid-20s in the mornings with highs in the low 40s. Continue to check back in to the forecast as we get closer for more details.
