Millions of Americans use lip balm every day, but does it actually work? Let’s connect the dots.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Millions of Americans use lip balm every day, but does it actually work?
Chapped lips are common, especially in winter. Cold air outside and dry heat indoors can strip moisture away.
Lip balm helps by sealing in hydration and protecting against harsh weather. But, it doesn’t actually hydrate your lips. It just seals in what’s already there.
That means if your lips are already dry, it probably isn’t helping, according to the Associated Press.
Some people can also have irritation or allergic reactions to certain ingredients, including fragrances, flavors and preservatives.
So how can you help dry lips?
Drink water, use a humidifier and avoid licking your lips because it makes dryness worse.
If nothing helps and your lips are still stinging, a dermatologist can check for allergies.
