Why do women live longer than men?

Researchers looked at a number of factors that could contribute to the difference in the average lifespan between women and men.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the United States, women live about five years longer than men – but why? Let’s connect the dots.

Genetics may play a role, according to a report published Tuesday by the New York Times. Research suggests that having two X chromosomes provides extra protection against aging.

Hormones can also be a factor. That’s because before menopause women’s immune systems tend to be stronger, helping them fight infections better, the report found.

Lifestyle differences also matter. Women are less likely to smoke, drink heavily, or take dangerous risks, Kyle Bourassa, a psychologist and a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development at Duke University, told the newspaper. Women also visit the doctor more often and have stronger social networks.

External factors play a role as well. Men are more likely to work in dangerous jobs, experience violence, and suffer from stress-related diseases, researchers found.

Experts found there’s no single reason why women live longer but there may be multiple factors.
