When will Triad's wintry weather let up and when could we see more?

(WGHP) — After our quick burst of winter weather Sunday evening, roads remain wet in several areas and temperatures remain near or below freezing. That being said, slick spots are certainly possible in the Triad and are expected in the mountains and foothills, especially on bridges/overpasses. Temperatures remain near freezing into the overnight hours which is what makes tonight’s forecast tricky.

Freezing rain moves into the mountains and foothills around 2 a.m. Monday and expands east through the sunrise hours. Freezing rain is mainly expected in the following counties: Alleghany, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Stokes, Rockingham and Caswell.

Ice accumulation of up to 0.25″ is possible in the mountains, foothills and counties along the North Carolina/Virginia line which means slick spots are expected during the morning hours Monday.

A rain and freezing rain mix is possible into the Triad including Forsyth and Guilford counties, little to no accumulation is expected.

While the remainder of our viewing area is expected to see mainly cold rain, temperatures will be near-freezing, so watch for slick spots, especially near bridges and overpasses.

Rain will continue through 11 a.m. and taper off closer to noon. Temperatures look to remain in the 30s the majority of the day Monday and winds will begin to increase by the afternoon with northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph possible.

A very low chance for another burst of snowfall is possible Monday evening IF there’s leftover moisture remaining. However, the chance for this is only 20% and is mainly confined to the northeast of the Triad.

Skies clear for the overnight hours Monday into Tuesday which means temperatures will bottom out for Tuesday morning. We’ll wake up in the low 20s with some in the upper 10s. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the upper 30s with sunny skies.

Skies remain sunny Wednesday and Thursday and temperatures remain bitterly cold. We’ll start both days in the 10s with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 30s. Northwest winds will also be breezy at times which means it will likely feel even colder.

We’re watching the potential for another wintry weather system Friday and Saturday. For now, the confidence is low in the forecast but we’ll continue to watch for patterns and consistencies as the days get closer. For now, a 20% to 30% chance of a wintry mix is possible Friday into Saturday. Temperatures will be in the 10s Friday morning with highs in the upper 30s. By Saturday morning, temperatures will be in the mid 20s and highs reach the upper 30s.
