Scattered storms are likely Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, with more widespread rain expected through the evening and night.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact Team is asking people to be weather aware on Saturday, May 3, due to the threat of strong thunderstorms across the Carolinas.
Scattered storms are likely with the possibility of heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning.
While storms are likely to be scattered, there could be an impact on the Lovin’ Life Music Fest in Uptown, as well as the Kendrick Lamar concert at Bank of America Stadium.
When
Weather Impact meteorologist Chris Mulcahy says the most significant risk of storms will be after 3 p.m. Saturday.
There is a greater chance of rain as a cold front pushing through the Charlotte metro area slows down. Expect scattered storms to start around 2 p.m., with widespread rain likely through Saturday night.
Impacts
Rain will be scattered throughout Saturday afternoon with a chance of scattered storms. Additional rain is expected throughout the overnight hours into Sunday morning. Some areas will see several waves of rain and storms, which will lead to some flooding potential across North Carolina and South Carolina.
Need
Download the WCNC Charlotte app for the latest forecast and real-time severe weather alerts. Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich and the entire Weather Impact team will have regular updates through the weekend as tens of thousands of people flock to Uptown for concerts and sporting events.
Panovich says it’s critical for anyone attending an outdoor event to know the lighting policy and to seek proper shelter when severe weather strikes.
Worst places to be during lightning:
- Open fields, on top of a hill
- Near tall, isolated trees
- Near water or metal
Best place to be:
- Inside a car
- Inside a building
If lightning is detected within 8 miles, Bank of America Stadium will evacuate the seating bowl and field. Fans are told to seek cover immediately in a car or building. The protocol remains in place until there’s no lightning with an 8-mile radius for 30 minutes. The clock restarts with every lightning strike.
