CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte is proud to announce Meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees has been awarded a prestigious “Climate Coverage Champion Award” in recognition of her exceptional efforts in educating the public about climate change. This is the first year Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) of Charlotte is presenting awards to meteorologists from across the country.
Brittany’s impactful work spans across television, social media, streaming platforms and public events, with her “Climate IQ” series being particularly noteworthy.
“We are proud of the work Brittany has done in raising awareness about climate change and its impacts on our lives,” WCNC Charlotte News Director Todd Spessard said. “Brittany does a fantastic job explaining how and why this is important for everyone to understand.”
“Our changing climate impacts everyone,” WCNC Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees said. “It’s our job as meteorologists to help educate our viewers in an appropriate, scientifically accurate way, and a way in which it impacts them. Climate and agriculture, climate and air quality, climate and heat. The goal is to educate and not just identify problems but find and implement realistic solutions.”
Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address the climate crisis.
The Meteorologist Outreach Action Team, a subgroup of CCL responsible for developing the Climate Coverage Champion Award, has recognized two other recipients in the San Francisco Bay area and Washington, DC, in the past two months. This award aims to encourage local broadcast, print, and radio meteorologists to incorporate climate change coverage in their news and social media communications, thereby heightening public awareness and understanding of climate change and the actions that can be taken to address it.
