Truex reflects ahead of final Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. — What’s Martin Truex Jr.’s favorite memory of Charlotte Motor Speedway?

The winner of two Coca-Cola 600’s and the Bank of America 500 has a few to choose from.

He went with his dominant performance in May of 2016 in which he led a record 392 of 400 laps.

“Just looking back at that race, man, it was incredible what we were able to do,” Truex told WCNC Charlotte Sports Director Nick Carboni. “It’s something that, may never be topped. To have a record like that, that might stand for a long, long time is pretty neat.”

In June, Truex announced he would retire from full-time racing at the end of the season. He made the playoffs but was eliminated at the end of the Round of 16.

But with several visits to Victory Lane in Concord, he’ll enjoy one last ride at Charlotte Motor Speedway at this Sunday’s ROVAL 400 on WCNC Charlotte.

“I guess just a lot of good memories,” he said. “And a lot of heartbreakers here too as well. Just a fun track. A really cool place.”

Truex is excited to race the ROVAL, which was reconfigured in May to include some sharper turns, and perhaps more chaos.

“They finally put a jump in one of these tracks for us,” he said. “I was on the simulator today and you kind of get airborne there going between turn five and that new turn six. So it’s gonna be interesting for sure.”
