RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Storm Team Alert Day has been issued for Monday due to the risk of localized flooding and possible isolated tornadoes from a landfalling tropical system.

As of Monday morning, the coastal low pressure system remains a “Potential Tropical Cyclone” according to the National Hurricane Center but is slightly stronger with winds sustained at 50 mph. The NHC believes it still could become a tropical storm before landfall later on Monday, but regardless, the impacts will be the same with gusty winds up to 40 mph and flash flooding through early Tuesday.

As of the 5 am advisory, the tropical disturbance’s center was located 95 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina with heavy rain and storms wrapping around up to coastal North Carolina.

The latest forecast track shows that the center of circulation will likely remain out of our area, but impacts are still expected across our region.

This system is forecasted to bring 2-4″ of rain and 20-40 mph wind gusts, with the highest being in the Sandhills region.

Minor flooding is likely, especially throughout the Triangle where the ground is saturated. There is also a chance for a few isolated tornadoes, especially on Monday evening and overnight.

Remember, to stay updated with how this system develops and impacts our weather over the next 24 hours.
