(WGHP) — A tropical disturbance in the northern Caribbean will likely become a tropical storm or hurricane this weekend, strengthening as it moves away from Mexico and towards Florida and potentially reaching the coast of the Carolinas, according to FOX8 Meteorologist Charles Ewing.
On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency for counties that could potentially be affected.
The disturbance, called Potential Tropical Cyclone Four, is currently sitting over Cuba. As long as the storm is on land, it’s unable to strengthen.
The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on the storm as it could become Tropical Storm Debby by Saturday night. It’s expected to travel along the west coast of Florida before making landfall at Florida’s Big Bend with winds of roughly 65 mph.
The storm has raised concerns, leaving those in its path to wonder if it will stay stagnant near Florida or Georgia. According to the NHC, it is possible that the storm could hit northeast Florida before traveling up the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina.
The storm could potentially hit Wilmington, N.C. Wednesday morning with winds of 60 mph.
