(WGHP) — Tropical Storm Debby reemerged off the South Carolina coast last night and will hook back to the northwest today.
Debby is forecasted to make another landfall along the SC coast, between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, then make its way north, through the Piedmont on Thursday.
Torrential rainfall is possible across North Carolina starting Thursday morning and extending through Friday morning. Most of the FOX8 viewing area will be under a Flood Watch through this period. The National Hurricane Center projects that the storm will cross from South Carolina into North Carolina Thursday afternoon or evening and is ranking the Triad at a moderate risk for flash flooding from the storm.
Locally, we’ll have breezy conditions with scattered showers. Highs today are going to reach the lower 80s and the chance of rain is 60%.
Scattered showers continue through the evening, then the first intense rainbands arrive around daybreak Thursday morning. Lows will be in the lower 70s.
Thursday brings a 100% chance of heavy rain, and the likelihood of flooding and flash flooding. Winds will be sustained between 15 and 20 mph with higher gusts, so scattered power outages are another concern, with the NWC saying the strong winds are likely to start early Thursday morning for the Triad.
Total rainfall may exceed 6″ in the Triad with up to 8″ in the southern Piedmont. Highs will stay cool, in the mid-70s.
Rain starts to taper off midday Friday, but the Flood Watch stays in effect through Friday night. Even as the center of Debby churns through central Virginia on Friday, we will have blustery conditions across the Triad at least into the afternoon.
The good news is that we may have some sunshine later in the afternoon, kicking highs into the mid-80s, and that will be the beginning of some improvement in the weekend forecast.
Saturday and Sunday are going to be dry, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.
We’ll have highs in the upper 80s on Saturday and mid-80s on Sunday.
More stable weather is on the way for Monday and Tuesday of next week.
Highs will be steadily in the lower 80s. There are isolated showers in the forecast for Monday, then a 40% chance of rain on Tuesday.
