Triad organization sends donations to help beautify Helene-destroyed gardens in western North Carolina

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful donated 1,000 flower bulbs to the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge.

LAKE LURE, N.C. — The dozens of gardens at the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge are slowly returning to its former glory with the help of a Triad organization.

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, a program that has promoted environmental improvements in the city for over 40 years, donated roughly 1,000 bulbs of various plants to the Rutherford attraction.

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge was known for its historic bridge, the Rainbow Bridge that honored beloved pets and many other areas that were forced to close in late September due to Helene’s devastating destruction.

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful is part of Keep America Beautiful, the largest community improvement organization in the country. Lake Lure Flowering Bridge volunteers say KWSB coordinator Andy Szabat contacted them and sent approximately 1,000 bulbs of various plants.

On Monday, volunteers planted all of the bulbs in pots to allow them to grow. The bulbs will then be transferred to the gardens when the ground thaws.

Lake Lure Flowering Bridge volunteer Becky Melton told WFMY News 2, “We can’t wait to plant them and see them grow.”
