According to permits from the City of Wilmington, locations include the Suites on Market, Cotton Exchange, Cape Fear Club, 100 block of North Front St., and Little Drum Landing on Ann Street.
Cameras will begin rolling Aug. 29, with dates so far also including Sept. 3 through 5.
The series, which follows a dysfunctional family through managing its fishing empire in a sleepy coastal town, also will be captures scenes in Southport. Fishy Fish Cafe is being transformed into a restaurant for the movie and announced last week on its social media it will keep diners up to date on fall operating hours, as it’s planned to be part of locations from September through December.
The talent associated with the production has also been announced to include Holt McCallany (“Fight Club,” “Mindhunter”) and Maria Bello (“Beef”). Bello has appeared on “A History of Violence” and “NCIS” and is a Golden Globe nominee, won a SAG award for her work on nineties’ medical drama “ER” and recently a Critics Choice Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for “Beef.”
McCallany and Bello will take on roles as a married couple, Harlan and Mae Buckley, who have two children. Harlan and his dad have run the fishery for years, even if questionably, but after a heart attack Harlan turns it over to Mae. As she takes the reins with her son, it’s steered it in dubious ways to keep the family operation afloat.
TW Cast & Recruit is listing all casting calls and currently is looking for background actors to become fishermen, DEA agents, sheriffs deputies, marine patrol, and EMTS, plus fish house servers, bartenders and staff. Pay is guaranteed to be $96 for eight hours and time-and-half for anything more; filming days could last up to 12 hours. Some bumps in pay are eligible with “special ability” rates if needed in future scenes. Any gender and ethnicity is welcome, ages 25 and up (learn more here).
The show’s storyline is set along the North Carolina coast and is inspired by true events, according to Williamson, who has penned the script. Well-known for works like “The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the latter three filmed in Wilmington, most recently, Williamson produced the Russell Crow film, “The Exorcism.” It also had a red carpet debut at Thalian Hall earlier in the spring.
Universal Studios television arm — known for Emmy-nominated shows including “Loot” and “Hacks” — is behind the series, to stream on Netflix.
“The Waterfront” is one of four shows Williamson signed in a deal with Universal to produce, also including “Rear Window,” “The It Girl” and “The Game.” His company Outerbanks Entertainment is executive-producing, which includes partner Ben Fast.
The film’s homebase is Cinepsace Studios on 23rd Street. The number of episodes and debut date has yet to be released.
