Superintendent Mo Green to host eight listening sessions across North Carolina

New state Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green recently announced eight public listening and learning sessions across North Carolina, with the goal of gathering insight to help create his strategic plan for the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Green, who started as superintendent on Jan. 1, has previously said he and his leadership team plan to have the new strategic plan in place by June 2025.

“The strategic plan we create will advance my vision for every child in North Carolina to achieve educational excellence and for our public schools to be the best in the country,” Green said in a press release. “For the plan to be effective, it must be driven by the people we serve — from students and teachers to employers and community leaders. I encourage anyone who cares about the future of public education to join us on the ‘Mo Wants to Know’ tour.”

We have limited time together, so we are grateful for your presence, attention, and insight for the duration of the event. For your consideration in advance, the agenda will include the following questions for you: 1. What should we celebrate and continue in NC public schools? 2. What are the challenges and potential solutions for NC public schools? 3. What is your big idea for NC public schools? 4. What are the actions that you/your organization are committed to do to enhance NC public schools?

Already, Green has laid out “six pillars” he believes should guide DPI’s work to achieve educational excellence for students.

  • Prepare each student for their next phase of life.
  • Invest in public schools by fully funding public education.
  • Revere public school educators.
  • Enhance parent and community support.
  • Ensure safe, secure learning environments.
  • Celebrate the good in public education.

Green is also meeting privately with leaders in the education, business, community, nonprofit, and religious sectors to learn from their insights. Additionally, he will host 22 invite-only virtual sessions as part of the tour, the release says.

“Your input will play a crucial role in helping us build a comprehensive strategic plan for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the State Board of Education, with clear goals, initiatives and accountability measures aimed at making our public schools the best in the nation,” an event page says.

Media who plan to attend should RSVP to communications@dpi.nc.gov. The release says that “a brief opportunity for interviews will be held at the end of each public session.”
