Joshua Brown was charged with felony hit-and-run.
LIBERTY, N.C. — Details about the crash that killed 17-year old Daniela Mendiola in Alamance County on Aug. 20 have been released by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
According to the report, Joshua Thomas Brown was traveling down NC-1100 at approximately 55 miles per hour when he collided with Mendiola in the roadway.Â
After the incident, Brown is said to have traveled to 8963 Pleasant Hill Church Road. He returned to the scene in a different car to the one he was driving when he struck Mendiola to report the accident, according to State Highway Patrol.
Charges weren’t filed against Brown immediately after the incident, prompting Mendiola’s family to gather alongside supporters outside the Alamance County Courthouse to try and push for what they believe is justice in this case.
Brown was formally charged with felony hit-and-run on Sept. 4 and was given $50,000 secured bond.
After Brown’s arrest, the Mendiola family released the following statement:
“We appreciate all the help and support from our community and even those outside of our community who have helped bring light to Daniela’s case by sharing her story but especially those who took time out of their busy days to join us in the protests we held. We are aware he is in custody. We are in hopes that he is prosecuted to the highest extent as he took our sweet Daniela’s life and we will never get her back.”
