CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Around two-thirds of nursing homes in North Carolina were late to be inspected in the last several years, according to a state audit.
A report from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor found late inspections at 289 (68%) of the state’s 425 nursing homes between March 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, 39 (10%) of the nursing homes went more than 20 months without a state inspection.
Nursing home inspections are considered late if they are not inspected more than 15 months since the prior inspection, according to federal guidelines.
Auditors also determined, as of Dec. 31, 2023, 71 (17%) of the state’s nursing homes were already overdue for their next inspection.
