ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One Rock Hill pediatrician is starting small to work towards diversifying the world of medicine.
Dr. Nikita Lindsay and Atrium Health are hosting Kid Doc Summer Camp.
It’s designed to help influence children of diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in medicine.
“I love how interested they are, even if they never came in with the thought about science or medicine,” Dr. Lindsay said. “They leave her telling me about the heart and telling me about their cousin with sickle cell or telling me about their dad with diabetes.”
She says each day campers meet doctors who are already working in the field and even get to participate in hands-on activities that give them a glimpse into what it’s like to be a doctor.
“Kids here take that home and they will remember that for years to come,” Dr. Lindsay continued. “Just like any other summer camp they attend, this will be one that sticks with them.”
The program began in 2021. Dr. Lindsay says she hopes that the camp helps children of color understand that being a doctor is as attainable for them as any other career.
