Sheetz will give $5,000 to both the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and Special Olympics of North Carolina. The nonprofits will receive $2,500 each as the 6401 Carolina Beach Rd. opens on Thursday, May 1.

Customers who patronize Sheetz that day are also encouraged to offer support through nonperishable items donated to the Food Bank or monetary donations, also welcome in support of the Special Olympics.

According to Sheetz — which has more than 700 locations in Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina — it already supports the Special Olympics as well through product donations and event volunteers.

Sheetz is operational in Wilmington on Shipyard Boulevard and in Hampstead on U.S. 17. This will be their third store grand opening in this southeastern corner of North Carolina; on Thursday customers will receive free coffee and fountain soda, can sign up for a chance to win a $2,500 gift card, and those who donate to the food bank will receive a branded thermal Sheetz bag.
