A complex pattern of fronts will be bringing a risk of severe weather to North Carolina late today. Most of the day, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and warm. We are going to have highs rising to near 80° this afternoon. Around 5 p.m., we’re expecting thunderstorms to develop along the Blue Ridge. Some storms will be strong enough to produce damaging winds and large hail, which can cause extensive damage. These thunderstorms are expected to move into the western Piedmont by 6 p.m. and cross the Triad from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please have your mobile device emergency notifications set to “on” today.
Showers and storms move eastward by midnight, and clouds will stay put through daybreak. Lows are going to be near 60°.
A cold front is going to cross the Piedmont tomorrow, bringing a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. There is a Level 1/Marginal Risk of isolated storms producing warnings. The primary risks will, once again, be from damaging winds and large hail. Highs will be in the mid-70s.
In the wake of the cold front, the weekend will be cooler and drier. Highs are going to hover in the lower-to-mid-70’s and we’re expecting persistent clouds to stay around all weekend. The only rain in the forecast is late Sunday when a 20% chance of showers pops up.
The beginning of the work week is going to be wet and, at times, stormy. A storm will churn out of the Gulf and move into the Carolinas Monday and Tuesday. Showers and a few thunderstorms are likely on those two days with highs in the lower 70s. On Wednesday, there will be a little more sunshine peeking out as the storm moves to our north. As a result, we will warm to the upper-70s. There will still be a 40% chance of a few thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon.
