PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — There is a Level 2/Slight Risk of severe weather in Alleghany, Ashe, Stokes, Surry, and Wilkes Counties this evening and overnight.

There is a Level 1/Slight Risk of severe weather across the Triad for this evening and overnight.

It’s a very mild start to the day, with temperatures in the upper-60s to lower-70s. Light showers will continue to march across the Piedmont from west to east this morning. The rest of the day is going to be cloudy and warm, with highs in the mid-80s.

A powerful storm to our west will be producing a widespread threat of severe weather through Kentucky and Tennessee today. This evening and overnight, smaller, leftover storms will be moving across the Appalachians, into western Virginia.  Some of these storms may hold together enough to produce damaging winds in the mountains and northern foothills of North Carolina, where there is a Level 2/Slight Risk of severe weather.  As the storms move east-southeast, they will diminish in strength, so the severe weather risk drops to Level 1/Marginal over the Triad and into the southern Piedmont. By tomorrow morning, we will have some lingering showers but no severe weather threat. Lows will be in the upper-60s.

After 8 a.m., showers taper off and skies begin to partially clear. A cold front is going to cross the Piedmont during the day, but the only notable impact will be from lower humidity on Sunday.  Saturday highs are going to stay very warm and muggy, near 86°. Sunday, however, highs will be closer to 83° with a more refreshing, dry airmass in place and partly cloudy skies.

The cold front that comes through on Saturday will drift back to the north, bringing an increasing chance of rain next week.  We will have mostly cloudy skies on Monday with only a 20% chance of showers. Highs will stay near 83°. Tuesday and Wednesday, the chance of showers and thunderstorms increases to 40% and 60%, respectively. Temperatures will fall to near 80° on Tuesday and upper-70s on Wednesday. By Thursday, highs will cool to the lower-70s with morning showers, then clearing skies.
