RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A potent storm system is pushing across the country this weekend. A Level 3/5 risk for severe weather is in place with this system today in parts of the Deep South. It will move our way on Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center placed most of central North Carolina in a level 1 “Marginal Risk” on severe weather Sunday. Rain is expected on both Saturday and Sunday, but a cold front could trigger a few stronger storms on Sunday morning, mainly between 9 a.m. and noon. The main threat will be damaging winds.

Gusty winds

While energy is pretty limited for our area, because this is happening in the morning, wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph outside of storms. You’ll notice the winds picking up late Saturday ahead of the cold front.

Additional rain

We have recorded 2.26 inches of rain this month and an additional inch is possible through Monday with localized higher amounts possible.

Futurecast: Saturday

Saturday morning will be cloudy and chilly. Off-and-on showers can be expected throughout the day, with temperatures not getting out of the 40s. Temps will rise overnight into Sunday with more rain expected. The breeze will also kick up substantially.

Futurecast: Sunday

A line of showers and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder will move through on Sunday morning, with skies starting to slowly clear after lunchtime. Damaging winds will be possible with the line, and even before the rain gets here, gusts up to 45 mph are possible Sunday morning.

We dry out and clear out by late Sunday afternoon, with quiet weather expected Monday and Tuesday. That could change by Wednesday, as a potent winter storm could move up the east coast by mid-week.
