Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, tornado risk possible in Piedmont Triad on Monday

(WGHP) — Mostly cloudy skies Sunday evening with scattered showers possible through the remainder of the evening and overnight.

Not everyone will see rain or an isolated thunderstorm tonight, but the chance for rain is 40%. Temperatures will remain in the 70s through 9 p.m. and, even overnight, our temperatures will remain relatively warm thanks to increased cloud cover and increasing moisture.

Monday is the day you want to make sure you’re paying attention to the weather.

A level 3, enhanced, risk for severe weather is in place for the entire Piedmont Triad with the main threats with any severe thunderstorms being damaging winds (60+ mph), isolated tornadoes and a low threat for hail. We’ll also need to watch for the flash flooding potential if any storms are able to drop a lot of rain in a short period of time.

While data is not in complete agreement for how widespread storms will be or for timing, if all the ingredients are able to line up, it looks like we’ll see storm chances increasing after 2 p.m. with the best chance for storms from 4 p.m. through 7 p.m. in the Triad. Lingering storms could remain even after 7 p.m., behind the main line into the early overnight hours.

Regarding temperatures on Monday, we’ll start the morning in the low to mid-60s with afternoon highs reaching the upper 70s before storms roll through.

On Tuesday, temperatures will be a little cooler with morning lows in the upper 40s and highs in the upper 60s. Skies will be mostly sunny and winds will be calmer than they’ve been recently.

We’ll start Wednesday in the upper 40s with highs reaching the upper 60s. Skies will be mostly cloudy and stray showers will be possible.

A BIG warm-up is in store for us in the second half of the week. We’ll go from the upper 60s on Wednesday afternoon to nearly 15 degrees warmer on Thursday. We’ll start Thursday around 63 degrees in the morning but our high temperatures will be in the low to mid 80s. Skies will remain mostly cloudy with a few stray showers possible.

If you think Thursday’s warm, it gets even warmer on Friday with many nearing the low 90s! We’ll start Friday morning in the mid-60s and afternoon highs reach the upper 80s. Skies will be partly cloudy and a stray shower can’t be ruled out.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies for the weekend with stray showers possible both days. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s in the mornings and highs will reach the low to mid-80s on Saturday and the upper 70s on Sunday.
