Last storm debris pick-up will begin Jan. 20 in affected areas in western counties of South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. — When Hurricane Helene passed through South Carolina in late September, thousands of downed trees were left behind by the storm, causing damage to power lines and structures and blocking roadways.
South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has been in clean-up mode across the state, hauling off more than 3 million cubic yards of debris caused by Helene. The department is now in the final phase of debris pickup and wants to inform residents and businesses still dealing with storm debris that SCDOT crews will make a final push to collect in certain counties on Jan. 20.
Residents and businesses in Aiken, Greenville, Laurens, Pickens and Spartanburg counties are asked to pile any remaining debris by the side of the road, safely out of the roadway, by Monday, January 20, so that crews can begin their final passes on debris pickup and the cleanup process.
If you have trouble moving debris to the right-of-way because of limited road frontage or debris blocking the way, call SCDOT at 855-467-2368.
Motorists in the affected counties should be aware of SCDOT crews working on many of the rural routes in the area and should slow down, use caution, and give the crews room to work.
SCDOT has used more than 25 sites around the state to collect storm debris until it can be disposed of.
