Raw sewage spills into Lake Wylie, Charlotte Water says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A damaged low-pressure sewer pipe caused dozens of gallons of wastewater to spill into Lake Wylie, Charlotte Water said.

The spill happened along Lochmere Road, which is just off Shopton Road West near Thomas McAlister Winget Park. Charlotte Water said an estimated 70 gallons reached Lake Wylie, saying most homes in the area are served by low-pressure sewer systems to send waste to water treatment plants. Officials determined a low-pressure pipe was damaged, resulting in the leak.

“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Charlotte Water spokesperson Cam Coley said. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not break down in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”

If you suspect a sewage spill in your area, you can report it to Charlotte Water by calling 311 or 704-336-7600. The agency responds to calls 24 hours a day.
