Raw sewage spills into Lake Norman, Charlotte Water says

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Nearly 100 gallons of wastewater spilled into Lake Norman in Cornelius when a sewer pipe failed, Charlotte Water said.

Charlotte Water crews responded to a reported spill on Taffrail Way in Cornelius earlier this week. Officials said an estimated 90 gallons of wastewater spilled into the lake. A damaged low-pressure sewer pipe caused the spill, according to Charlotte Water, which says most homes along the lake are served by low-pressure systems that send waste to treatment plants through gravity-fed sewer lines.

“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Charlotte Water spokesperson Cam Coley said. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not break down in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
