RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) – Randolph County Emergency Services is happy to report there were no storm-related injuries when Debby moved through on Thursday,

But some people across the county’s homes were damaged. There were about 160 calls for service related to the storm. The calls were spread out throughout the day so they were able to keep up.

The majority of calls were for downed trees in the road, on power lines and in a few cases, on top of houses.

“I feel blessed,” said Belinda Garner, who had a massive tree fall on top of her house. “About 8:00, it just shook the house…it just scared both of us to death,” Garner said.

Garner and her husband were not injured, but inside there is damage. “Our hole,” Garner said as she pointed to the hole in the ceiling. “Sheetrock got wet and it just collapsed and if you look over here, you can see I stuck plastic bags up there,” Garner said.

Her neighbor owns a tree removal service and immediately came to get the tree off the house. “It makes you feel good, it does, I am glad we have them, my boys are always good to me,” Garner said.

On Friday, her son, Sean, got to work at the house. “That is where the brunt of the tree hit the house so I have got some tarp, going to get some tarps on just to keep the water out until the roofing folks get here to take care of that,” said Sean Garner.

His parents have lived at the house for 51 years and never had anything like this happen. The storm left its mark on the house and in their memory. “It was scary, i tell you, you are asleep and something hits the house like that, it jolts you,” Garner said.

The temporary fixes are in place and now they wait. “Then we are going to have to find some sheetrock people, the popcorn ceiling is coming down,” Garner said.

And eventually for the insurance to make the repairs. “My husband and I were discussing dropping the insurance because we have lived here so long and never had anything happen, good thing we thought better,” Garner said.

Emergency management said to make sure to contact your insurance for any damages and be aware this is the time the scammers are out so if anybody approaches you for cleanup make sure to do your research first.
