Person shot during Kannapolis Police traffic stop

Kannapolis police officers had stopped a vehicle believing one of its occupants had outstanding warrants, the department said.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A traffic stop in Kannapolis turned violent Friday night when one person was shot during an encounter with police.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. near 251 North Cannon Boulevard.

Kannapolis police officers stopped a car believing one of its occupants had outstanding warrants. During the stop, one person in the vehicle was shot and later transported to Atrium Hospital – Cabarrus for treatment, the department said in a statement. 

No police officers or other people in the car were injured.

WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Kannapolis Police Department for more details about who shot the person. 

Following standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI) conducts an investigation into the shooting.

Authorities have not yet released details about what led to the shooting, the identity of the injured person, or their current condition.
