Pedestrian hit, killed in southwest Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crash late Wednesday evening turned deadly after a driver hit a pedestrian in south Charlotte.

CMPD said it happened around 8 p.m. in the 6100 block of Old Pineville Road near Archdale Drive. When officers got to the scene, they found a pedestrian lying in the road and a nearby 2000 Lexus RX300 with damage on its bumper, hood and windshield, according to CMPD.

The pedestrian, later identified as 39-year-old James Hines, died at the scene. 

The initial investigation shows Hines was walking on Old Pineville Road and was wearing dark-colored clothing when the driver hit them. CMPD said the driver of the Lexus, 45-year-old Tamika Smyre was impaired at the time of the crash, so she was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving while license is revoked and possession of marijuana. 

According to the arrest report, Smyre was screened on the scene for impairment and after performing poorly, she admitted to using Oxycodone four times a day.
