Patriots name former UNC star Drake Maye as starting quarterback against Texans

New England takes on the Houston Texans this upcoming weekend.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Former North Carolina quarterback and Charlotte native Drake Maye will make his first start at quarterback for the New England Patriots this weekend, according to multiple reports.

The team announced Tuesday that Maye will start New England’s game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Patriots are 1-4 this season with quarterback Jacoby Brissett — who played collegiately at North Carolina State.

Maye was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by New England after breaking numerous records during his time with the Tar Heels. Maye holds school records for passing yards in a single season (4,321) and passing touchdowns in a season (38). He set both records during the 2022 college season.

The Patriots won their first game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, but they haven’t been able to earn a win since. New England currently ranks 31st in the NFL in points per game (12.4) and yards per game (250.8) and dead last in passing yards per game (119.4).

New England is currently a big underdog in its Week 6 game against Houston, which is 4-1 and ranks fourth in the NFL in yards allowed per game (274.2).

Maye will be one of four rookie quarterbacks to start a game in 2024, joining Chicago’s Caleb Williams, Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Denver’s Bo Nix.

The Patriots play the Texans on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Foxborough. The game will be broadcast on CBS in select markets.
