ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Threats made on social media threatening mass violence toward Western Rockingham Middle School and a particular teacher were deemed “not credible” on Monday after a review by Rockingham County Schools and local law enforcement, according to a press release.

Rockingham County Schools said it received an anonymous tip about threats toward WRMS and the teacher Sunday at 11:14 p.m. and immediately reported the threats to local, county and state law enforcement partners.

Despite deeming the threats as not credible, extra law enforcement personnel was posted at Western Rockingham Middle between 6 and 6:30 a.m. on Monday during student arrival.

Information found out during the morning identified the individuals who made the threats were Western Rockingham Middle. According to the press release, the Madison Police Department has filed juvenile petitions with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office “for review and applicable charges for the students involved.”

“At no time were students or staff in harm’s way,” said RCS Director of Safety Sean Gladieux. “Our established safety protocols worked effectively and our partnership with law enforcement resulted in a positive and safe outcome. RCS is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and appreciates the swift action and cooperation of our law enforcement partners. We encourage families and students to remain vigilant and continue reporting any safety concerns through appropriate channels. Always remember to Report, Don’t Repost.”
