CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Every year, WCNC Charlotte and the Boy Scouts team-up to collect food for Nourish Up, an organization that works to make sure families across the region have access to the food they need.
Scouting for Food is an annual service project organized by the Boy Scouts of America, aimed at collecting food donations to support over 40 local food banks. It has been a cornerstone of community service in Charlotte, bringing together individuals, businesses and organizations to fight hunger and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
The drive takes place in early February. That’s when thousands of dedicated Scouts collect non-perishable food items, helping to ensure that families across the region have access to nutritious meals throughout the year.
This year, the initiative collected 185,000 pounds of food.
Included in the effort, $21,000 was donated to the Scouting for Food cause. Each dollar raised equates to four pounds of food. That way, the Nourish Up organization can purchase meat, produce, eggs and milk for those in need.
Known for many years as Loaves and Fishes, Nourish Up has made sure people don’t have to face food insecurity. With more than 200,000 people in that situation, the organization provides choices in groceries and meals that are healthy and also appealing.
“We are proud to partner with the Boy Scouts for this incredible cause,” Tina Postel, CEO of Nourish Up. “Hunger is a pressing issue in our area, and Scouting for Food provides an opportunity for everyone to give back and help feed those who need it most. Together, we can make a lasting impact.”
Scouts went door-to-door throughout the Charlotte area to collect donations. People also donated non-perishable items such as canned goods, dry pasta, rice and boxed meals at designated drop-off locations throughout the area.
“The need in our community continues to grow, and it’s thanks to the hard work and generosity of those who participate in Scouting for Food that we are able to make a real difference,” Postel said.
