North Carolina woman arrested for vehicle insurance fraud

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Wednesday the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner, Mike Causey, announced the arrest of Shallee Smith, 34, of Charlotte, for insurance fraud. 

According to the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigation Division, Smith provided Dairlyland Insurance Company with false statements on her vehicle policy. 

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said.

The incident occurred on Sept. 29, however, authorities arrested Smith on Dec. 10. Smith had a first appearance on Dec. 11 in Mecklenburg County District Court where she was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond. 

“Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud.” Commissioner Causey added.
