NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The Federal Highway Administration announced $352.6 million in emergency funding Tuesday to repair roads and bridges damaged by Hurricane Helene in Tennessee and North Carolina.
The funds will help restore critical infrastructure damaged when the Category 4 storm struck Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee in September 2024.
Of the total amount, $250 million will be headed straight to the North Carolina Department of Transportation to repair I-40.
The U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service in North Carolina will also receive portions of the funding to to remove debris and downed trees, repair guardrails and make repairs along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The storm caused landslides, bridge collapses and widespread flooding across multiple states. Officials estimate total damage could exceed $4 billion.
The emergency funds were provided through the department’s “quick release” process, which expedites aid to disaster-affected areas.
Here’s a breakdown of the funds:
- $250 million for North Carolina DOT
- $70 million for Tennessee DOT
- $7.6 million for the U.S. Forest Service
- $25 million to the National Park Service
