North Carolina Medicaid portal briefly inaccessible Tuesday amid federal funding pause

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A number of states have reportedly lost access to the Medicaid payment portal amid the Trump administration’s freeze of federal aid.

According to the state’s health department, North Carolina is among the states to be potentially impacted by the pause.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services’ $40 billion budget for the year is 79% funded by the federal government. These funds go directly to critical services and programs that help individuals and communities across the state receive necessary health resources.

“The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is working with federal partners to determine the scale of impact the pause in federal grants, loans and financial assistance programs will have on the department’s operations,” a statement read on Tuesday.

The focus, the department spokesperson said, is to “get a comprehensive and accurate accounting of what is impacted.”

“For a period of time today, NC Medicaid was not able to access the Payment Management Services portal but is now able to get into the system,” an NCDHHS spokesperson told CBS 17. As of Tuesday afternoon, NCDHHS said beneficiaries have not been impacted by the pause, but concerns remain regarding any potential impact the freeze may have on the agency.

Now that access to the portal is restored, the department is working to “confirm that requested funding will be received.”
