GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — One of the spots we have been watching all day is Latham Road. North Buffalo Creek runs along the road and topped its banks around 10 a.m. and reached the street in some spots.
The water rushed down the creek to Revolution Mill where there was some minor flooding along the paths and sidewalks, but Yanceyville Street was still open, and there were no issues for drivers in the area.
At the corner of Yanceyville Street and Cornwallis Drive, Revolution Park was almost completely underwater. You could barely see the top of the bleachers, and the field was buried deep in the water.
There was small debris on roads across the city, but a massive tree toppled over onto West Wendover Avenue. It blocked all the westbound lanes near Holden Road for hours. Greensboro police said there were no injuries.
There were some traffic signals out in the city. Overall, most roads were open. Several people on foot or in their car saw the impact Debby brought to Greensboro.
“I like watching natural events take place. This is a giant storm… When I could hear my sump pump running like every two minutes, I knew it was a lot more rain than we were used to getting,” said Pete Grantham, who lives in Greensboro.
People around the Latham Park neighborhood tell FOX8 they were glad to stay home on Thursday and stay out of the rain, but it has been tough for pet parents to find time to let the dogs out with very few breaks in the rain.
“We finally saw a break in the rain where my little dog and I can take a potty walk, so we decided to take advantage of that,” Sue Anne Wade said.
She took a walk down to the low spots by the creek to look at the flooding.
Greensboro police had a busy day. They responded to 62 calls for service, which included 19 vehicle crashes and 22 trees down.
