NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department is on the scene of a major incident on Bourbon Street.

During a press conference Wednesday morning, officials said a man intentionally drove his pickup truck into the crowd on Bourbon St. around 3:15 a.m.

“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

At least 10 people were killed, and 35 were taken to the hospital with injuries. After driving through the crowd, the suspect shot two officers after he crashed his vehicle.

Investigators said they found an improvised explosive device at the scene.

The FBI is taking over the investigation. FBI officials said the incident was not terrorism.

People are advised to stay away from the area from Bourbon St. to St. Ann.

“We do not want anyone on Bourbon St. today,” Kirkpatrick said.
